University of Rochester researchers have joined what is billed as the largest sports concussion study in history — an expansive, nationwide effort that seeks to understand how the brain recovers in the near-term and over a lifetime.
The Concussion Assessment Research and Education Consortium, or CARE, began work in summer 2014 with Division I schools, military academies and a three-year, $30 million commitment from the NCAA and U.S. Department of Defense.
UR joins this fall and is among six schools being added out of 132 that applied. That brings the consortium to 21 colleges as the study enters its second year, with plans to grow to 30 campuses next year and eventually enroll 35,000 student-athletes.
