Two Rochester Area Firms Join Start-Up NY Through RIT

A pair of local companies are joining a state-sponsored project that creates tax-free areas associated with colleges and universities.
Darkwind Media Ltd. and Optel Inc. are joining the Start-Up NY initiative through Rochester Institute of Technology, the state said Monday.
Darkwind Media is a recent graduate of the incubator Venture Creations. The company develops gaming software and provides consulting services to other game development studios.
The company will be expanding to meet international demand for game porting and development, moving downtown and creating 11 net new jobs and investing $431,000, the state said.
Optel is in its formative stages, officials said, and provides services to companies in the medical device field. The company will create 18 net new jobs while investing $285,000, officials note.
The state announced a total of 10 businesses joining Start-Up NY, investing nearly $40 million and creating 267 new jobs.
