Good Monday morning:
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread across the globe, America remains one of hottest of hot spots. The United States recorded more than 1.9 million new infections in July, nearly 42 percent of the more than 4.5 million cases reported nationwide since the pandemic began and more than double the number documented in any other month, according to data compiled by The New York Times. Dr. Deborah Birx, the Trump administration’s coronavirus coordinator told CNN yesterday that the country is in a “new phase” of the pandemic and said, “What we are seeing today is different from March and April. It is extraordinarily widespread.”
On this week’s episode of our conversation series, Propelling New York Forward, we talk with Columbia University epidemiologist Les Roberts about how the coronavirus pandemic in the United States is like, and unlike, pandemics elsewhere in the world. Dr. Roberts, noted for his work with the US Centers for Disease Control and the World Health Organization, brings his unique perspective to this country’s struggles to understand and respond to COVID-19. It promises to be a compelling discussion. We hope you’ll join us this Thursday at 2:00 pm.
