Good Tuesday morning:

This past weekend’s Memorial Day holiday, with its weird mix of life both shutdown and partially reopened, served as a reminder that the patterns we’ve known for some time have been profoundly changed.  Whether these coronavirus-wrought changes will be permanent or short-lived remains an open question.  However, it seems likely that a probable impact of the pandemic will be a rapid acceleration of trends that have been in the works for some time.

In his essay, The Future of College is Online, and it’s Cheaper, Hans Taparia observes that COVID-19 is poised to devastate higher education’s current business model.  At the same time, he argues that colleges have an opportunity to embrace virtual learning in a way that “could expand access exponentially and drop its cost by magnitudes — all while shoring up revenues for universities in a way that is more recession-proof, policy-proof and pandemic-proof.”  Change is never easy, particularly for an industry like higher education with its embedded costs in personnel and physical plant, but the pandemic has made clear that regardless of our industry, we’re all facing the imperative to re-imagine what our businesses will look like in a post-pandemic world.

We hope you’ll join us this Thursday at 2:00 pm as we launch Propelling New York Forward, our series about the bio/med industry’s response to the coronavirus pandemic and how we begin the process of restarting the economy.  For our first episode, we’re featuring a conversation with Chockalingam “Palani” Palaniappan, Chief Innovation Officer at Ortho Clinical Diagnostics, as we discuss the role of testing in the fight against the coronavirus and the development of a COVID-19 antibody test.  It promises to be a lively and informative discussion.  You may register at www.medtech.org
