Good Wednesday morning. Today we’re focusing on testing as a prerequisite to easing current lockdown restrictions.
At yesterday’s briefing, Governor Cuomo noted that the lack of a coronavirus cure or vaccine means that the state will not be virus-free in the near term and not before it begins efforts to restart its economy. Consequently, large-scale testing will be necessary to determine which New Yorkers can return to work and what distancing efforts must continue. Two recent developments have moved the state closer to its goal of comprehensive testing.
First, the New York Department of Health has developed a test to detect antibodies to the COVID-19 infection in an individual’s blood. This test is an important step to determining whether a person has developed immunity to the virus and when he/she could potentially return to work or school. The DOH is working with the FDA to scale up this test for widespread use.
Second, a rapid (<15 minute) test is now available to determine whether an individual is positive for COVID-19. This test allows healthcare providers to quickly determine if a person is suffering from the disease and is at risk for infecting others. Unfortunately, current testing capacity is insufficient to meet the state’s needs.
As a result, Governor Cuomo announced that New York will invest in private companies with the ability to bring this rapid test to scale. The need is urgent and immediate. Companies interested in responding to this call are urged to contact the Governor’s office at (212) 803-3100, or at COVID19supplies@esd.ny.gov Of course, we at MedTech are ready to assist and companies are encouraged to reach out to us directly.
