Another successful MedTech annual conference is in our rear-view mirror and 2018 is winding to a close. It’s a good time to reflect on where we’ve been and where we’re headed. I want to share with you some of my thoughts. More importantly, however, I’d like to engage you in a conversation about how MedTech can best deliver value to our members and this region.
MedTech’s origin story dates to 2005 when a group of Central New York medical device manufacturers came together to brand itself “CNY MedTech.” Our founding members understood the advantages of economic agglomeration and the benefits of collaboration, both among companies and between industry and academia. Our initial success led us to recognize that our scope was too narrow and there existed a need for an advocacy organization to focus on promoting the larger life sciences community. Today, we have grown to a state-wide association of companies and academic institutions from across the bio/med industry. Our members are in both the device and pharmaceutical spaces; they range from individual entrepreneurs and startups to large companies employing thousands. They operate locally, regionally and globally. They are united in their dedicated to saving lives and improving the human condition.
Our mission is simple: to develop the relationships, tools and programs that enable New York State companies to bring tomorrow’s medical solutions to the healthcare marketplace. We seek to achieve that mission through collaboration, education and advocacy. Our programming reflects that goal. Whether it’s a Meet Up that shines a light on an individual member, an IDEAS Summit that delivers a “Big Idea” to the bio/med community, or our Annual Conference, that brings together hundreds of leaders from across the state, we deliver the solutions our members seek. This year, we’ve focused our attention on improving our value proposition. We’ve super-charged our Job and Career Board to help the industry with its pressing workforce challenges. We’ve curated our Membership Advantage program to ensure that we’re partnering with companies that can deliver the products and services our members need at prices they can afford. We introduced Incubator+plus to capture more of the startup community and connect entrepreneurs to companies looking to leverage their expertise.
If you were at MedTech2018, you experienced the new and improved MedTech. We introduced you to innovators from across New York. You heard from experts on such cutting-edge topics as blockchain technology, artificial intelligence and digital health. Our keynote speakers Sean Swarner and John Nosta inspired and challenged you. Our Speed Networking program and networking breaks throughout the two days culminated in a terrific business development and social event at Syracuse’s original Dinosaur-Bar-B-Que. In all, I’ll bet you learned a thing or two, connected with a new partner, and hopefully found an opportunity to move your business forward.

I recognize, however, that events aren’t the only way to deliver value. We’re exploring new and different ways to connect with our members. We’re revamped this website to be more interactive and a better platform for information and news. We’re looking for ways to use the web to deliver value while also ensuring that we continue to provide a forum for personal connections and collisions of value. I’d like to hear from you. Are our events providing you with the information you seek? Are you finding value in our networking activities? What would you like from us that you aren’t currently receiving and how can we best deliver that material to you?
I hope you’ll give some thought to this matter and share your ideas with us. Please feel free to reach out to any member of the MedTech team at any time. You may always reach me directly at email@example.com, on my cell at 315.727.1497, or via Twitter.
I look forward to hearing from you. In the meantime, best wishes for a joyous holiday season.
