Rochester Institute of Technology showcased its new $1.5 million Battery Prototyping Center on Friday alongside state officials.
“The Battery Prototyping Center at RIT will be a tremendous resource to startups, established companies and researchers seeking to prototype a wide range of battery materials,” said Ryne Raffaelle, RIT vice president for research and associate provost.
The new center—located on the fourth floor of Institute Hall on the northwestern side of campus—was created to aid in research and work with companies to support the region’s growing battery industry, officials said.
Nearly 50 industry executives participated in a workshop Friday to better understand the multi-faceted uses of the center.
Companies will use the center for prototyping the next generation of rechargeable batteries in a range of sizes.
The center’s formation was possible because of support from New York State Energy and Research Development Authority; Empire State Development, the state’s economic development agency; and the New York Battery and Energy Storage Technology Consortium.
