Research Associate

The Research Associate will carry out scientific research in The Rensselaer Institute of Data Exploration and Applications, working on specific research projects, independently and as part of teams, and with high quality. For more information visit The incumbent will perform the research by assisting in the design of experiments and identifying software and equipment needs as required, analyzing and interpreting the data collected as well as writing-up experimental results as manuscripts for publication.


Minimum Qualifications
-Ph.D. in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Bioinformatics, Informatics or Human Computer Interaction (or closely related field)
-Demonstrated recognition internally and externally as an authority in one or more these or related disciplines
-History of working in a project environment
-Three (3) years of experience in projects including academic and/or industrial research experience

Preferred Qualifications
-Research or Industrial experience specifically in areas such as data analytics, interface design, user experience or related field

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
-Ability to apply mastery and broad understanding in a specific field (i.e., computer science, bioinformatics, HCI, etc.) to practical scientific or technical projects
-Strong programming skills
-Ability to utilize visualization and demonstration software
-Excellent analytical, technical, reasoning and innovative problem solving skills
-Ability to function competently in a team environment
-Ability to respond quickly and effectively to changing situations
-Ability to balance conflicting priorities
-Ability to interact and communicate effectively and courteously with members of the campus community
-Ability to interact and communicate effectively and courteously with external customers
-Computer expertise; including ability to use a variety of software packages to analyze data
-Knowledge of appropriate field specific systems and techniques of collecting & recording relevant data
-Ability to analyze and interpret statistical data
-Ability to communicate statistical data in a clear, concise manner
-Knowledge of and ability to pay strict attention to research protocol
-Ability to remain calm and composed when dealing with difficult situations or people

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
-Knowledge of semantics, data integration and fusion, human computer interaction or user experience capabilities.
