Overview
A medical writer holds an editorial and consulting position and works under the close supervision of more senior staff. He/she is expected to have a basic understanding of the principles and practices of medical communications, specifically editorial aspects, and will support tactical implementation on behalf of AXON’s clients.  

Responsibilities

Business Development

  • Assist new business development by doing research, collecting information, creating competitor profiles, preparing slide presentations and other pitch materials
  • Prepare for/participate in new business pitches and creative sessions
  • Contribute to the development of client plans and simple new business proposals
  • Contribute to simple business development projects to enhance the AXON business model
  • Be sufficiently familiar with AXON credentials to be able to discuss informally with potential clients and colleagues
  • Begin to establish contacts in client organisations, among suppliers and within the industry

Consulting Process

  • Be aware of current events, trends and issues, and their impact on the industry, on AXON and on our clients
  • Conduct research to support client mandates
  • Compile and manage databases and lists
  • Input to meetings/teleconferences as part of the consulting team and prepare meeting notes
  • Take simple client briefs and accurately up date other relevant team members
  • Work in conjunction with a programme manager or senior programme manager in handling day‐to‐day client business
  • Participate in tactical implementation of events and programmes

  • Apply AXON, journal and client style guides to own work and that of others
  • Manage supplier relationships for a client and effectively brief a supplier, including freelance writers
  • Develop and maintain professional relations with opinion leaders
  • Assume responsibility for defined client projects and effectively liaise with client on own projects
  • Ensure quality control for own product
  • Support company initiatives through active participation in staff meetings and other functions

Team Management

  • Provide support and coaching to team members and accounts within their practice group and to colleagues in general when required
  • Provide short, informal training sessions in particular areas of expertise
  • Proof read and edit work of colleagues
  • Keep senior team members informed of work in progress
  • Participate in buddy/mentor system

Editorial

  • Draft key messages and show how they can be supported by clinical data
  • Develop accurate and timely reports from simple scientific discussions
  • Edit and data‐check simple documents
  • Write complex scientific documents with a high degree of support
  • Conduct appropriate research to support the development of scientific documentation and provide clinical/scientific support to new business activities

General & Financial

  • Ensure that assigned responsibilities are completed efficiently, effectively, with a high degree of attention to detail, on time and on budget
  • Assume responsibility for profitability of designated client projects
  • Participate on internal committees and planning of company initiatives
  • Collaborate with other practice groups as required
  • Proactively meet billing targets and seek out opportunities for project work
  • Be accountable for individual learning about the business, the industry and specific specialty skills
  • Estimate fees and costs for simple projects and provide support to the development and management of more complex budgets
  • Input to forecasts and highlight variations
  • Input to identifying capacity needs on allocated projects
  • Adhere to budgets
  • Accurate completion of timesheets on a weekly basis

HR Management

  • Demonstrate responsibility for own development and expand knowledge through direct experience, internal development and training courses, as necessary
  • Adhere to high standards of service excellence for the AXON and the client
Requirements:

Requirements

  • College or university degree or equivalent in a relevant area (communications, pharmacy, science)
  • At least one and a half years’ work experience preferred
  • Intermediate writing skills (as assessed at interview using AXON’s writing tests)
  • Novice‐level presentation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and team work skills

Skills

  • Intermediate writing skills with demonstrated potential for more advanced work; includes ability to write first draft of various materials and proof read material with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to create and manage databases
  • Ability to implement portions of communications plans and/or programmes
  • Basic presentation skills
  • Strong demonstrable computing skills with all the main programmes used by AXON
