The Opportunity:

As we continue to grow, we are seeking an Ideation Development Optical, Photonics Senior Engineer who will be part of the Ortho Clinical Diagnostics Advanced R&D team in Rochester, NY. This position develops optical, photonic devices and subsystems that perform imaging and/or optical measurement functions in in-vitro diagnostic instruments that meet performance, cost, reliability, and schedule targets.

The Responsibilities:

  • Develops and evaluates (cost, reliability, performance, manufacturability, etc.) concepts for optical devices and subsystems, including illumination, imaging and non-imaging optical collection devices, optical sensors, spectrometers, and consumables. 

  • Develops and conducts tests using optical breadboards to determine feasibility of concepts and to troubleshoot optical problems.

  • Develops and manages requirements pertaining to optical devices and subsystems.  Collaborates with other disciplines as necessary.

  • Designs and optimizes optical devices and subsystems using optical simulation tools. 

  • Collaborates with colleagues on issues pertaining to optics. 

  • Works with outside development partners as needed to achieve project goals.

  • Works closely with Ortho’s assay development scientists on issues pertaining to optics.

  • Optical characterization of materials, such as those used in the manufacturing of high-volume consumables.

Requirements:

The Individual:

  • Masters or PhD in optics, optical engineering, or imaging science.

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in the development of illumination, imaging, and non-imaging optics.   Ideally, experience would include in-vitro diagnostics with an emphasis on imaging and measurement of low light signals.   Fluorescence imaging/measurement experience would be especially beneficial.

  • Well versed in applications using optical components such as CCD, CMOS, photodiodes, photomultiplier tubes, LED’s, lasers, optical filters, and spectrometers.

  • Strong skills using one or more optical design software tools (ZEMAX preferred).

  • Experience using optics lab instrumentation.

  • Creative problem solver.
