Welch Allyn Inc. said Tuesday it has acquired Hubble Telemedical Inc., a privately-held healthcare company that enables remote screening for diabetic retinopathy, a disease that can threaten a person's vision.
Based in Knoxville, Tenn., Hubble Telemedical has developed a network over which retinal images taken at a doctor's office are sent to specialists for analysis. The specialists produce diagnostic reports and send them back to the ordering physician or clinic.
Welch Allyn President and CEO Stephen Meyer said the acquisition of Hubble Telemedical strengthens Welch Allyn's position in delivering "sight-saving solutions into primary care settings where they can have the largest impact on improving population health while also lowering the cost of care."
