Researchers from the University of Rochester have received a grant to develop an app to track the spread of Ebola and other infectious diseases, officials announced Friday.
The grant from the National Science Foundation will allow the researchers to conduct a pilot study this summer in Lagos, Nigeria, UR officials said. The researchers will use the app for Android phones to complement traditional forms of monitoring Ebola and other diseases in tracking their spread, helping victims find help more quickly.
The app, called Node, monitors location patterns, people’s habits and their needs for resources such as hand sanitizers or gloves. It can then help them find care, improve the monitoring of disease and increase awareness of disease prevention, officials said.
