Many people might obsess about everything from making sure burners on their stove are turned off or that their hands are clean.
But when the behavior becomes so extreme — done repeatedly to the point of interfering with a person's daily activity — it falls into the category of being an obsessive-compulsive disorder. The disorder affects about 2.2 million American adults, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.
Scientists at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry have been awarded a $10 million grant by the institute to lead a study about obsessive-compulsive disorder. The grant, recently awarded, covers a five-year period.
