The University at Buffalo is launching a major branding initiative which began recently with a widespread survey of students, alumni, faculty and staff.

The four-phase process will conclude with a full roll-out of new messaging and branding material this fall. It will encompass each of UB’s 12 schools and the university as a whole.

The campaign was envisioned in the UB 2020 planning process and a directive of university president Satish Tripathi as a way to define and differentiate the UB experience from Western New York to China and everywhere in-between. UB officials emphasized that the initiative was developed by a wide variety of stakeholders across campus, who also helped choose the outside contractors.

It’s an especially relevant time for universities to be thinking about their identity, as funding issues, societal expectations and emerging technologies are creating unprecedented pressure across the U.S., said Nancy Paton, UB’s vice president for communications.
