SKANEATELES, N.Y.—FEBRUARY 15, 2012—Senator Kirsten Gillibrand addressed the members of MedTech and many others who were in attendance for her visit last Friday to Welch Allyn’s medical manufacturing facility in the Finger Lakes.

The senator spoke about Upstate New York and her plans for reviving the manufacturing industry in the region. MedTech members voiced concerns about the instability of tax credits for research and development, shortage of angel investors and higher education.

“Creating a research and development tax credit that is annual will help spur innovation and create an incentive for manufacturers to continue being inventive,” said Gillibrand. She emphasized keeping American manufacturing facilities operating, and rewarding companies such as Welch Allyn for keeping jobs in the U.S.

On education, the senator’s attention is mainly on early childhood education and K-12th grade, in addition to working with Congress to research possible college affordability plans. “Congress is working to enhance the science and technology aspects of education with more hands on learning for industries that are growing and helping the community,” she said. “It does make the difference to a student.”

Gillibrand wants to continue to help rebuild the economy. “Job creation is so important. It is ideas that create jobs and that is what Welch Allyn is doing right here in Skaneateles.”

Welch Allyn is a founding member of MedTech—the hub of Upstate New York’s Bio/Med industry. MedTech helps provide opportunities for the leaders of New York to understand the scale and potential of the bioscience and medical technology industry for job creation and economic growth, engages their support and participation, and provides them with exposure to a group of their constituents.
