Nationally Acclaimed Thought-Leaders to Address Bio/med Community Next Week at Medtech 2012 Annual Conference

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Four prominent speakers from across the country will address the full audience during MedTech’s 2012 annual conference at the Hyatt Regency in Rochester, N.Y. on Monday, Sept. 24 and Tuesday, Sept. 25.

The plenary sessions will take place throughout the conference, and are guaranteed to provide attendees with unique insight and expertise into various areas of the bioscience and medical technology industry. The four speakers each bring an exceptional drive and vision for change that will captivate attendees and bring excitement to MEDTECH 2012.

The annual conference will kick off on Monday evening with the welcoming address, presented by plenary speaker Daniel Schultz, MD, F.A.C.S., senior vice president of medical devices and combination products at Greenleaf Health LLC. His address will give a regulatory perspective on innovative approaches to systemic healthcare improvements. Schultz joined Greenleaf Health following a distinguished 35-year career devoted to supporting and advancing Americans’ public health as a physician, teacher, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) official and member of the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS). He has been recognized many times for his contributions and dedication to public health.

On Tuesday morning, Joseph M. Smith, MD, Ph.D., F.A.C.C., chief medical officer and chief science officer of West Health, will present the MEDTECH 2012 opening plenary address. The central topic of his address will be “innovating for better product integration and patient outcomes. Dr. Smith will focus on the importance of working at a system-wide level to integrate actionable and meaningful information into patient care. He will pose motivating questions and present ideas that will challenge attendees to think about major, unanswered elements in how things work across the healthcare ecosystem.

Bradford C. Berk, M.D., Ph.D, chief executive officer of the University of Rochester Medical Center, will deliver the Tuesday luncheon keynote address. His address will primarily focus on understanding the patient as both the patient and the clinician. Since injuring his spinal cord in a 2009 bicycle accident, Dr. Brad Berk has developed a new perspective on patient care. His experience after the accident and throughout his continued rehabilitation has shown him clearly that healing is about more than science-based treatments.

MEDTECH 2012 will wrap up Tuesday afternoon with the closing plenary address on patient-centered medical experiences, presented by Gerard van Grinsven, president and chief executive officer of the Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital. With more than 25 years of global experience in the luxury hospitality industry, Gerard Van Grinsven became president and chief executive of the Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital in 2006. He took on the role embracing not only healthcare, but an excellent service experience for patients at Henry Ford West Bloomfield, transforming it from a hospital to a healing environment.

MEDTECH 2012 will also include eight concurrent panel sessions focusing on various current trends, issues and best practices across the Bio/Med industry. The conference will feature a showcase of new product innovations and leading research from New York State.
