Interview with Ben Burton, President & CEO, iuvo BioScience
1. Please tell us about your company.
iuvo BioScience is a Partner Research Organization (PROTM) specializing in R&D and sterilization services for medical device and pharmaceutical companies. Formed in March 2015, but built on a 40-year heritage in the industry, iuvo BioScience delivers value to our clients through exquisite science, industry-recognized expertise and a client experience, rooted in flexibility, responsiveness and partnership, that is second to none. Our facility located outside of Rochester, NY is our corporate headquarters and is the home to our advisory services (pre-clinical for medical device and pharmaceuticals, regulatory strategy, dossier development, sterilization cycle development / validation, etc.) as well as laboratories to support the needs of our clients in analytical chemistry, microbiology and toxicology – including an AAALAC-accredited vivarium. We also have a commercial ethylene oxide sterilization operation located in Erie, PA to serve the sterilization needs of our clients. We treat every project like it is our own, and our sole mission is to exceed our client’s expectations in all we do. We will not let you down.
2. What are the benefits of doing business in New York State?
Benefits of doing business in NY: the state seems to be re-establishing its commitment to growing and supporting local businesses, especially small to mid-size businesses like iuvo BioScience, through programs like StartUp NY and the Upstate Revitalization Initiative. Additionally, local agencies in Rochester like COMIDA have been very supportive and proactive in supporting our aggressive growth plans.
3. In your opinion, why does the medical device industry matter so much in New York State?
The medical device industry across the globe continues to be an incredibly important industry – as our population continues to age, and as the disease states that we need to treat become ever more complex, innovation in this industry is critical to our economic and social wellbeing. In terms of NY specifically, the density of research-based colleges and universities offers the perfect opportunity to discover new and novel medical devices that will serve as the new product engine for the medical device industry. Investments by the state recently in Buffalo, as well as the commitment of funds to the Finger Lakes Regional Economic Development Council will free up money to support innovation, development and commercialization of medical devices in NY. Given the need in the United States and across the globe for new and novel medical devices, a vibrant medical device industry is vital to the economic goals of the state of New York.
4. While displaying at MD&M East, what are you looking forward to the most?
While at MD&M East, we are looking forward to speaking with our existing and potentially new clients. A show like MD&M East is a great opportunity for service providers and sponsors to comingle, discuss emerging trends in the industry, and discuss their individual needs. We walked the show last year, a short 2 months after starting as iuvo BioScience, and found the show to be very useful. Being able to partner with MedTech and exhibit as part of their presence at the show gives us an even better opportunity to reach clients and find opportunities where we can solve problems and add value for the medical device companies in attendance.
