General Electric Co. has formed a team to explore moving its corporate headquarters out of Connecticut after that state approved a new budget with $1.2 billion in tax increases, Reuters and other news outlets are reporting.
GE, headquartered in Fairfield County, has 5,700 employees in the state. The GE team will look at moving to a state with a “more pro-business environment.”
On Thursday, officials in Florida’s Tampa Bay area said they were interested in talking with GE and another Connecticut-based company, Aetna. GE already has a presence there. Its Fort Edward plant, in fact, is closing at the end of September with operation shifting to a GE plant in Clearwater, part of the Tampa metro area that also includes St. Petersburg.
