Buffalo is set to host two major biotech industry conferences in 2015.
First, the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus will host the Association of University Research Parks 2015 international conference from Sept. 29 to Oct. 2.
Local organizers hope to draw more people to Buffalo than the 240 who attended last week’s 2014 international conference, held in Boca Raton, Fla., said Patrick Whalen, the chief operating officer of the Medical Campus and a member of the association’s board.
The region plans to show off the public- and private-sector development taking place on the campus to representatives of academic research parks from across the United States and Canada. Conference attendees will stay at the Hyatt Regency Buffalo.
Whalen said he unsuccessfully submitted bids to host the AURP conference for five or six years in a row before Buffalo was selected for the 2015 event.
Also next year, on Oct. 14 and 15, the MedTech Association is planning to hold its annual conference at HarborCenter in downtown Buffalo.
The association, which represents New York’s biosciences and medical technology companies, drew 230 people to this year’s conference in Albany. Whalen will serve as the conference chair for both events and recently was named to the MedTech board.
