BlueCross BlueShield Peels Back Curtain on Medical-Device Review

BlueCross BlueShield Association is peeling back the curtain on how it reviews medical devices for reimbursement through a service launching next year.

The Chicago-based organization is creating a Web portal where med-tech companies can submit data and see what information BlueCross used to evaluate a device, an executive said at the LifeScience Alley conference Wednesday in Minneapolis.

Reimbursement from health care insurers is typically key to a device's success in the market. However, med-tech companies often don't have a full picture of what went into an insurer's decision to approve or reject their products.
