Australia and New Zealand Abandon Plan for Single Medical Regulatory Agency

The governments of Australia and New Zealand no longer plan to form a joint regulatory authority to oversee both countries' medical device markets.

According to a joint statement by the countries' health ministers, the Australia New Zealand Therapeutic Goods Agency (ANZTPA) effort was halted following a "comprehensive review of progress and assessment of the costs and benefits to each country of proceeding."

A plan by New Zealand and Australia to create a single agency to regulate the medical device sector in both countries has been dropped after a review of the costs and progress of the plan. Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration and New Zealand's Medicines and Medical Devices Safety Authority will continue to oversee their respective markets separately.
