The newly merged SUNY College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE)/SUNY Institute of Technology (SUNY IT) is now the SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly). I was pleased to learn about SUNY Poly's exciting, new collaborations with the bioscience and medical technology (Bio/Med) industry in New York. I look forward to working together to help grow the state's Bio/Med industry. 

2015 Upstate New York Tech Career Connections

I had the pleasure to talk and meet with students about the value and opportunities of a STEM career in the bioscience and medical technology industry, as part of the Branching Out with Your Science (STEM) Degree panel.

MedTech Meeting - Clarkson University

I had the opportunity to venture north and visit Clarkson University's Campus. It is always a pleasure to travel through the north country, where I was born and raised. Clarkson did not disappoint and had much to report on with respect to their new partnership with the Trudeau Institute and the entrepreneurial activities underway via START-Up NY and their Innovation Hot Spot program. I am also excited to report that Clarkson has joined MedTech as one of our newest research affiliate members. A big welcome to Clarkson University!

Joined by MedTech board chairman, Scott Gucciardi from Welch Allyn, I met with a number of federal legislators and staff regarding MedTech's federal legislative priorities including repeal of the medical device tax. These meetings were part of AdvaMed's annual fly-in activities.

A big thank you to Mike Williams and his team at Regeneron Pharmaceuticals for hosting our quarterly board meeting and a tour of their growing manufacturing campus. Regeneron is a biotech success story growing from 1,000 employees in 2012 to more than 3,000 today.  Researchers at this biotech lab and drug maker have discovered treatments for eye diseases and cancers.

I met with the Governor's office and presented to the Senate Select Committee on Science, Technology, Incubation and Entrepreneurship to present MedTech's 2014 Industry Report findings and discuss policy recommendations to better support New York's Bio/Med industry.

It was a pleasure catching up with member research affiliate, SUNY Research Foundation to learn more about SUNY-AIR (Academic Industry Roundtables.) I met with Bryan Allinson, VP and Matthew Mroz, Assistant Director for Innovation and Partnerships. We also discussed opportunities for future collaboration between SUNY's academic institutions and MedTech member companies. I look forward to continuing our dialogue to help stimulate public-private partnerships and ultimately bring tomorrow's medical solutions to the healthcare marketplace.

He was the perfect host and included a manufacturing tour for our directors. Thermo Fisher manufactures innovative analytical instruments, lab equipment and specialty diagnostics and employs over 1,000 in New York State.

MedTech's third forum in its MedTech Metro networking series featured Marnie LaVigne, the new President & CEO of LaunchNY. Marnie discussed her new vision for expanding the organization's influence, as well as efforts underway including a recap of 43North, “the world’s largest business idea competition”, which awarded $5 million in cash prizes in late October. Presenting companies included CPSI Biotech, Angulus Device and PurpleSun. Workforce Development Affinity Group Meeting at FTT Manufacturing
